Wayne Gardner Cole was welcomed home by his Lord on Monday, May 27 2013 after a lengthy illness with Parkinson disease.
He was born in Portland Oregon on Oct 1, 1935 to Frank Linden and Genevieve Badley Cole.
He moved to Richmond, Indiana in 1978 and to Hagerstown in 1988.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Janet; four children, daughters, Juulie (Michael) Downs and Rhonda Cole, of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Lisa(Chris) Urban, of Delmar, Delaware, son, Jeffry (Vicki) Cole of Emporia, Kansas, step daughters Sue (Scott) Chandler of Hagerstown, Indiana, Stephanie (Bill) Hammond of Mt. Sterling Ky., 17 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, brother Linden (Jane) Cole of Wheaton, Illinois and niece Cathy Cole of Boone, North Carolina.
His life work was in social work administering public assistance and child protection. He served in various capacities in Indiana, Oregon and Idaho.
Wayne was a graduate of Portland Christian High School, Portland Oregon, George Fox College, Newburg, Oregon and received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Utah.
He was a member of the Hagerstown United Methodist Church singing in the church choir and teaching Sunday School. He sang and performed with the Whitewater Opera Company for many years. He was also a member of the Toastmasters Club in Portland, Oregon and a member of the Hagerstown Optimist Club.
A memorial service to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held Friday, May 31, 2013, 6 pm, at the Hagerstown Methodist Church. A social gathering will be held immediately after the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church to share and celebrate Wayne’s life.
